Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relation ships among menopausal symptom, attitudes toward menopause, and depression in the community dwelling middle-aged or elderly women.

Methods: The design of study was a descriptive correlational design. The subjects were 202 women who visited the public health center. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson"s correlation coefficient.

Results: The menopause symptom of the subjects was moderate level, attitudes toward menopause were slightly positive, and the level of depression was moderate. The statistically significant difference in depression according to the presence of a spouse(t=2.33, p<.021), sexual life(t=2.14, p=.034) was shown. There were negative correlation between menopausal symptom and attitudes toward menopause(r=-0.312, p<.001), and attitudes toward menopause and depression(r=-0.269, p<.001). However, there was positive correlation between menopausal symptom and depression(r=0.549, p<.001).

Conclusion: The menopause symptom management program which can reduce depression with a positive attitude about menopause should be developed for the middle-aged or elderly women.
